What is a pressure garment?

A pressure garment is a soft and elastic medical device to support bodily function by utilising externally applied pressure. Pressure garments can be used by users of different ages in a wide range of use contexts as part of a care and rehabilitation process related to diseases, injuries, and functional capacity challenges.

In practice, a pressure garment is a closely fitting product that can be designed according to its primary intended use, the intended support effect, and the body area to which pressure is applied. The general term pressure garment may be used to describe both pressure and support garments that provide even pressure, as well as compression garments in which the pressure is graduated and decreases towards the central parts of the body.

Pressure garments are used as part of a treatment plan guided by a healthcare professional, based on an individual assessment and the recommendation of the treating professional.

Compression classes

The compression classification of Lymed products (classes 1–4) is based on the European pre-standard ENV 12718:2001.

Pressure levels

The product-group-specific pressure levels offered by Lymed, as well as the possible general recommendations presented based on them, are based on reference values defined in the literature, use-related recommendations, and experience accumulated from customer use and needs.

LYMED SKIN

Pressure garments for scar management

Medical device

Pressure garments are used as part of scar treatment to support scar management and the scar maturation process, particularly following burn injuries, extensive skin grafts, and surgical procedures. They are intended for the management of hypertrophic scars and keloids and may also be used preventively when wound or skin graft healing is prolonged and the risk of hypertrophic scar formation is increased.

Pressure garments support scar management through external pressure. Even pressure may help support the scar maturation process, manage scar thickening and stiffness, and alleviate scar-related discomfort such as itching, pain-related sensations, and redness. The benefits of pressure garments are greatest when they are used during the scar maturation phase as part of a structured scar management plan.

Pressure garments may be used as part of an individual treatment plan in certain skin-related conditions, as assessed by a healthcare professional, and may also assist in keeping dressings or wound coverings in place as part of an overall treatment, support, or recovery plan.

In pressure garments intended for scar management, the pressure is even throughout the product. Pressure garments are recommended to be ordered as custom-made to ensure optimal fit and to reduce the risk of irritation to healing skin. Pressure garment therapy may be initiated with lower-pressure products to allow gradual adaptation to the actual pressure garment.

Interim pressure garments with lower pressure levels can be used earlier, even before the start of active scar management; see the Interim & Light product group.

Lymed Skin products are primarily custom-made for all body parts. The products are manufactured with pressure levels intended for scar management. In addition, a lightened pressure level is available, which is particularly suitable for children.

LYMED COMPRESSION

Medical compression garments

Medical device

Pressure garments used for the management and prevention of oedema are referred to as compression garments.

Medical compression garments are used as part of oedema management and prevention in various conditions associated with swelling and circulatory load. Compression garments support the body’s blood and fluid circulation through external compression.

Compression garments may also be used preventively in situations where the load on fluid circulation in the lower limbs or other parts of the body is increased. Such situations include prolonged sitting or standing work, travel, pregnancy, and the recovery phase following surgical procedures.

Compression garments may also be used in venous conditions where wound dressings are used on the lower limbs, to support the management of oedema and swelling and to assist in keeping dressings or wound coverings in place, as part of an overall treatment, support, or recovery plan.

The pressure in compression garments is built so that it gradually decreases from distal to proximal areas, toward the centre of the body, with the strongest pressure at the extremities. This may help reduce fluid accumulation in the tissues and support oedema management. Lymed Compression products are primarily custom-made, and the pressure they provide is divided into four compression classes based on strength. Lymed Compression products can generally be used both during the day and at night.

LYMED SENSE

Neurological pressure garments

Medical device

Pressure garments are used as rehabilitation aids and tools in neurological physiotherapy and occupational therapy as part of a professionally guided rehabilitation and treatment plan.

The effect of neurological pressure garments is based on external pressure that supports body control, movement regulation, and body awareness. The pressure applied by the pressure garment may support proprioceptive feedback, which can help support muscle activation and movement control during rehabilitation. Pressure garments may also provide external support to joints, which can help manage joint hypermobility and support predictability and control of movement in everyday situations.

In clinical practice, pressure garments are also used as part of pain management alongside other treatment modalities, particularly in situations where pain is associated with impaired body control, joint hypermobility, sensorimotor deviations, or tissue load.

According to professional experience, the even external pressure provided by pressure garments and their body-awareness-enhancing effect may support the management of pain-related discomfort as part of an overall treatment approach. In clinical practice, pressure garments are used, for example, to support pain management in patients with CRPS and EDS, as part of a treatment plan assessed by a healthcare professional, without being considered a replacement for other medical or therapeutic treatment.

Lymed Sense pressure garments can be extensively customised according to individual goals to support daily functioning and rehabilitation objectives.

LYMED INTERIM & LIGHT

Interim care and light pressure garments

Medical device

Lymed Interim & Light products are standard-sized pressure garments that provide light and even external pressure, primarily used as part of scar management. The products are designed for short-term use during the transition phase before moving to custom-made products or as part of the early phase of treatment when pressure garment therapy cannot yet be initiated or when the user is being accustomed to pressure garment use. The products may also be used to help keep dressings in place.

Lymed Interim & Light products may also be used as part of pain management alongside other treatment modalities, particularly when light external support and a body-awareness-enhancing effect are needed in the early phase of treatment prior to the introduction of a custommade product.

In addition, Lymed Interim & Light products may be used as part of an individual treatment plan in certain skin-related conditions when a healthcare professional assesses that light external pressure supports the treatment goals.

LYMED POST-OP

Post-operational support garments

Medical device

Postoperative support garments are pressure and support garments used as part of the aftercare following various invasive surgical procedures.

Support garments provide external pressure and/or external support, which supports postoperative recovery by offering external support to the operated body area.

The pressure and external support may help support the management of oedema, swelling, bruising, and scars, alleviate recovery-related discomfort, and support movement and functional activity during recovery.

Postoperative support garments may also be used to assist in keeping dressings or wound coverings in place as part of an overall treatment or recovery plan.

Lymed Post-operation products are standard-sized products with even pressure.
